Alabama Hills
The Alabama Hills are rounded sandstone jumbles and arches in the Owens Valley, just outside Lone Pine. With the rugged granite backdrop of the Eastern Sierra, including Mount Whitney (the highest point in the contiguous United States) the textures and colors of sandstone and desert plants form an otherworldly contrast. I had previously taken some photos there in the Spring (the ones you see with snow on the mountains and noticed I could see the Milky Way at night from the middle of town). I traveled there on the weekend of the Perseid Meteor Shower, hoping the profound dark and clarity of the high desert skies would allow me to capture a few meteor trails. I hadn't counted on monsoonal weather, including rain and thunder obscuring the sky for much of the night. Remembering the old adage that "bad weather is a photographers best friend," I focused on capturing some beautiful sunset and sunrise images. I will return to capture other moods in these hills.
